Thanks to the rise of network-attached storage and remote access, we need never leave work again. Now even when we're at home, we can share our work machines. A ghastly state of affairs? You be the judge. However, the My Book World Edition, the latest iteration of Western Digital's lush external storage range, aims to make this process so easy you won't want to stop there....read the full review

    1 of 5 Never Again Saturday, July 04, 2009
    Joe Mahma from Buffalo, NY

Junk. Is that simple enough? I've never wasted as much time screwing around trying to get these drives to mount as I have with these. I'm replacing these junky drives hopefully soon.

5 of 5 Works well and it is quiet enough Tuesday, January 27, 2009
Spice from The Great Garden State
I had my friend the computer geek come over and set this up for me. He must have done a heck of a job because I have not had any issues whatsoever. I have no interest in accessing this remotely. It is intended purely as the back up for my home network and for my home business and as that it is performing perfectly. It is set-up in RAID-1 format and all goes well so far.

1 of 5 Awful.... Nuff said Monday, September 08, 2008
    Ty from Kunkletown, PA
This is supposed to be a NAS device but it has been more like a POS. The device has a bunch of files that were backed up months ago but has been unable to restore them although they are plainly seen on the device. I have had to reinstall Mionet and the Retrospect backup software numerous times with no luck. Absolutely unreliable and a letdown for the Western Digital brand name. Avoid this like the plague. In this case you're better off spending your money on a Blu-Ray writer to back up your files.

1 of 5 Wish I had returned it instead of trying to make i Thursday, June 19, 2008
    A Customer from Dallas, Texas
This item has not worked reliably for me from the start. At first I thought it was the Mionet software, but it wasn't. I upgraded my complete network to gigabit thinking the gig interface needed the speed. In a nut shell, if you want to get a file or two off or on it, its probably ok. But if you want to push 50 gig on or off, it will fail every time. At least mine has

    5 of 5 Good device! Friday, June 13, 2008
    A Customer from Louisville KY
Got this to replace a linux box running software raid0. In mirroring mode this seems to work well. I did not try any of the weirdo internet sharing software. I just connected it to my LAN, logged into its admin website, configured it to do mirroring and that's it. I have had no problems connecting from OSX or windows XP. It is relatively quite-- not silent by any means. Sometimes the fan turns off altogether, which is nice. I have not run any performance tests, but it does not feel slow.

    5 of 5 Exactly what I needed! Wednesday, March 26, 2008
    A Customer from Jacksonville, Florida
I just wanted a network share that I could back up from my PC and Mac computers. This works great and doesnt require the installation of any software if you only plan to use it on your local network. You can use the web interface to create SMB network shares that anyone can write to. I set up the drives in a RAID configuration and now I have an inexpensive network storage solution.

    1 of 5 doesn't work Thursday, January 24, 2008
    Patrick from NC
This thing worked for about 2 months, but it just died today. I can ping it from the network, but the drives are offline and they won't mount. No customer support options. Also, the included Mionet software also is unable to access the drive. When I try to connect it via USB, the drive is not recognized. I have a Buffalo Linkstation, also NAS, and it has never had problems. It never goes offline, and the file transfers are faster. Go with Buffalo.

1 of 5 Waste of Money Thursday, January 24, 2008
A Customer from Chino Hills, CA
DO NOT BUY! Does not stay connected to network. No connectivity problems with other computers and network printers except for the MyBook. Files stored from one computer and then opened from another are corrupted. Not a reliable product. Yes 1TB is great, but useless if you cannot reliably access the information when needed. Caution - with the manufacturer's 30 day return period because after that it is yours. Technical support is useless. I have had problems with (2) MyBookWorld in the first 4 months and now trying my 3rd through WD's warranty program.

2 of 5 But don't try to share files... Monday, January 07, 2008
    A Customer from Herndon, VA
From Western Digital site: *Due to unverifiable media license authentication, the most common audio and video file types cannot be shared with different users using WD Anywhere Access. A list of the non shareable file types can be found here. (list includes all known video and audio formats)

    5 of 5 Great Monday, December 03, 2007
    kcaminiti from Overland Park, KS
We're using the hard drive as a file server for our small business. It's working great and giving us nearly unlimited storage. The remote access is a nice bonus though it can be somewhat temperamental at times. However that may be due more to poor internet connections than the softwate itself. If we ever fill this one up, for the price we'll just buy another.

    1 of 5 Frustrated Friday, November 30, 2007
    joesaxton1 from Harrisburg, PA
I have spent many hours trying to get MioNet to mount the drive. I have researched all of the help menus with no success. It sees the drive but won't mount it. Since WD does not provide a phone number for technical support I have not been successful in getting this drive to mount. So far this drive has been a waste of time and money. It would have been nice to have the option to connect this drive directly to my computer as an option but that's not possible.

1 of 5 Not Mac compatible Tuesday, November 27, 2007
    Steve from Jacksonville, Illinois
I was snookered. I never in the world thought there would be a network hard drive that isn't Mac compatible. I'm trying to figure a work-around. But, at this point I fear I might have to pop this thing open for the hard drives. Got too excited by the price, should have done more homework. Poo on Western Digital for turning their backs on Apple users on this one.

5 of 5 Additional information about the World Edition Dri Tuesday, November 13, 2007
    david from Vancouver, Washington
Here are a few things you should know before buying a WD World Edition drive. First these drives do not connect to your computer; they connect to your network router. You cannot add files to this drive directly; you upload files across the internet and back to your drive. The upload speed is limited by your network speed. There is software called Mio-Net that makes this possible. Included is the minimum software necessary to make this possible and much encouragement for you to purchase the full service for $8 per month. Once you are set up with Mio-Net the first thing you’ll find out is that you cannot share all files. There is a large list of exclusions including Music of any kind and any files of over 1 gig. If you install this on your router and sign-up for the full service you will be able to log in to your computer from anywhere and run just about anything. You can upload and download any of your files. It is very similar to GO TO MY PC. Anyone you choose can be allowed to log on to the service and share standard business and photo files that you choose to share.

    5 of 5 A very happy customer Saturday, June 30, 2007
    Bill from Fort Collins, CO
I bought this drive for the sole purpose of storing Norton Ghost backups of my four home PCs. Peformance over my 1Gb network is terrific. Installation of the hardware was a breeze. Installation of the software less so. I ended up uninstalling the WD Anywhere Access (AKA MioNet) software. If you buy this drive just for the storage, skip the MioNet installation and just use http://mybookworld Shared Storage Manager to configure shares on the drive. See Appendix A in the PDF manual on the CD for details on the Shared Storage Manager. I have to agree with others that the fan is a bit noisy. It's a variable speed fan. As the device heats up in use the fan speeds up and gets noisier. But even at its slowest speeds the noise is noticeble. I installed my drive in my basement equipment room next to a network switch.

    5 of 5 Recommend for NE1 that wants a NAS Monday, May 14, 2007
A Customer from New York, NY
I bought this to share documents, pictures and music to my various PC's. It took awhile to setup becuase I reconfigured it for Raid 1 so instead of 1 TB I got 500 GB of space. This way I got my important data backed up Transfer of data is easy and the speed is as expected. The noise of the fans is noticable but you get use to it. For the price and performance it is worth it. I am actually thinking of buying another one.

3 of 5 Good concept Poor delivery Monday, April 02, 2007
    Raul Rosa from Nashua, NH
The NAS drive is small and not very noisy. The connection via LAN however, even over 1000 Mbit line is slow. In Windows Vista, the software that comes with it does not install. Checking the requirements I noticed that it is not supported on Vista. Although Vista will see it as a PC on the network and allow you to dump data to it. But you can't configure it. So it is just an open shared public drive on my network for now.

3 of 5 Pretty Fast but man is it loud Friday, March 09, 2007
    A Customer from MD
I bought the 1TB World Edition about a week ago and set it up in my network closet (next to my Gig-e switch). It shares very well with MacOS (even though it says PC only), it has a decent web based administration interface and allows granular user access to shares (that are created in the web interface). It also comes with MioNet basic and I can easily access the drive at my house from my network at the office, nicely done. MioNet is windows only which is why the system requirements state windows only, it is only necessary if you want to have instant network access to your data without any setup headache. It is a very good product for the money... Now the annoying part, this drive is louder than my Desktop PC, iMac, Macbook, and IBM laptop all together why WD could not have designed a quieter solution is beyond me... The fan (reason for the noise) is always running at full-speed, I would have had to return the drive to the store if I had to keep it on my desk... Now the great part... Since it is networked you can put it anywhere you can run Cat5/6e, I would suggest the basement far, far away from living areas :) I have mine in a downstairs coat closet and can hear it through the door (I have no basement). If you have somewhere to put it so it does not annoy you it is a great purchase.
